전남·광주 통합특별시장 선거에 출마했다 중도 사퇴한 이병훈 더불어민주당 호남발전특위 수석부위원장이 김영록 예비후보에 대한 지지와 연대를 공식 선언했다.
이 부위원장은 24일 광주시의회 브리핑룸에서 기자회견을 열고 김 예비후보 캠프의 총괄상임선거대책위원장을 맡아 선거를 함께 이끌겠다고 밝혔다.

이번 합류는 단순한 지지 선언을 넘어, 행정 경험을 기반으로 한 선거 전략 강화 차원에서 의미가 있다는 평가가 나온다.
이 부위원장은 이날 “광주·전남 통합은 기대와 함께 행정 혼선, 지역 간 균형발전 문제 등 다양한 과제가 동시에 존재하는 복합적 과제”라며 “이러한 난제를 해결하기 위해서는 풍부한 행정 경험과 소통 능력이 필수적”이라고 강조했다.

이어 “이 같은 조건과 성과를 모두 갖춘 김영록 예비후보가 초대 전남광주특별시장을 맡을 적임자”라고 밝혔다.
두 사람은 광주 서석초·서중·광주일고 동문이자 행정고시 출신이라는 공통점을 갖고 있어, 정책 이해와 행정 협업 측면에서 시너지 효과가 기대된다는 분석도 제기된다.

김영록 예비후보는 “광역행정 통합이라는 중요한 시기에 행정 중심의 시각을 제시해 준 데 대해 감사드린다”며 “이병훈 부위원장의 합류는 큰 힘이 될 것”이라고 말했다.

또 “예비경선 과정에서 제시된 정책과 공약을 잘 계승해 통합특별시의 완성도를 높이겠다.”며 “행정 경험을 바탕으로 실질적인 정책 시너지를 만들어 나가겠다.”고 밝혔다.

정치권에서는 이번 연대를 계기로 전남·광주 통합특별시장 선거가 정치 중심 경쟁에서 행정 역량 중심 경쟁으로 전환될 가능성이 있다는 분석이 나오고 있다.

Lee Byung-hoon, Senior Vice Chair of the Democratic Party’s Honam Development Special Committee, who had withdrawn from the Jeonnam–Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan Mayor race, has officially declared his support for candidate Kim Young-rok and announced a political alliance.
Lee made the announcement on the 24th at a press conference held in the briefing room of the Gwangju City Council, stating that he will join Kim’s campaign as Chief Standing Campaign Chair and lead the campaign efforts together.
His participation is seen not merely as an endorsement but as a strategic move to strengthen the campaign through administrative experience.
Lee stated, “The integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam is a complex challenge that involves not only expectations but also administrative confusion and issues of regional balance.”
He added, “To resolve these challenges, extensive administrative experience and strong communication skills are essential.”
He further emphasized, “Kim Young-rok, who possesses both the necessary qualifications and proven achievements, is the most suitable candidate to become the first mayor of the integrated metropolitan city.”
The two share common backgrounds, having attended the same schools—Seoseok Elementary School, Seojung Middle School, and Gwangju High School—and both passed the national civil service examination, raising expectations for strong policy alignment and administrative synergy.
Kim Young-rok expressed his appreciation, stating, “I am grateful for the administrative perspective emphasized at such a critical moment of regional integration,” adding that “Lee’s participation will be a great asset.”
He also said, “We will build upon the policies and pledges presented during the preliminary primary to enhance the completeness of the integrated metropolitan city,”
and added, “We will create tangible policy synergy based on administrative experience.”
Political observers suggest that this alliance could mark a turning point, shifting the Jeonnam–Gwangju integrated mayoral race from a competition centered on political influence to one focused on administrative capability.
