여의주봉 마니보탑 부처님진신사리봉안식 / 사진제공=박충배 논설

경과보고를 말씀드리겠습니다.

부처님께서 열반에 드신 이후, 그 거룩한 진신사리는 여덟 갈래로 나뉘어 인도 전역 여덟 지역에 사리탑으로 봉안되었습니다.
이후 인도를 통일한 아쇼카왕은 이 사리들을 다시 거두어, 온 나라 8만 4천 곳에 사리탑을 세우며 불법을 널리 펼쳤습니다.

그 가운데 한 기의 사리탑은 머나먼 길을 건너 중국 동정호 남쪽의 아육왕탑에 모셔지게 되었고, 이때 방자명 거사가 그 진신사리 일부를 인수하게 됩니다.

그 인연은 다시 송나라의 대문장가 소동파 거사에게로 이어졌고, 세월 속에서도 끊어지지 않은 채 전해지다가, 마침내 청나라 말기에 이르러 옹방강 선생에게 전해지게 됩니다.

옹방강 선생은 이 귀한 사리를 자신의 제자인 추사 김정희 선생을 통해 대흥사 연파 혜장 선사께 증정하였으며, 이후 초의선사와 수룡화상, 철선화상으로 이어져 풍암, 취운 등의 제자를 거쳐 응송 노화상에 이르기까지, 한 치의 끊어짐 없이 법맥과 함께 전해져 내려왔습니다.

이처럼 천년의 세월과 인연을 따라 이어진 부처님의 진신사리는, 서기 1982년에 이르러 비로소 만월당 공양간 앞에 석가여래 진신사리탑이 조성되며 세상에 봉안되었습니다.

그러나 대흥사 조실 상월보선 대종사께서는 오랜 세월 외세에 의해 훼손된 채 방치되어 있던 여의주봉의 적멸마니보궁 사리탑을 늘 안타깝게 여기셨습니다.

대종사께서는 “반드시 이곳에 다시 사리탑을 복원하여 부처님의 진신사리를 봉안해야 한다.”는 간절한 원을 품으시고, 평생을 그 발원으로 살아오셨습니다.

그리고 마침내 시절 인연이 무르익었습니다.

현 주지 성해법상 스님께서 대종사의 그 깊은 뜻을 받들어, 지난 2026년 3월 31일 만월당 공양간 앞에 있던 기존의 사리탑을 해체하였고, 두 달여의 정성을 모아 오늘 5월 1일, 여의주봉 적멸마니보궁 사리탑을 새롭게 복원 조성하여 부처님의 진신사리를 다시 봉안하게 되었습니다.

이번에 조성된 사리탑 하층 기단의 하대석 안에는 월출산 용암사지에서 이운된 사리 일곱 과와, 상월보선 대종사께서 인도의 사대성지를 순례하며 모셔온 성토로 빚은 보주 여덟 과가 함께 봉안되었습니다.

또한 1층 탑신석 안에는 지난 3월 말 해체된 기존 사리탑에서 나온 여섯 과의 진신사리가 담긴 사리함이 다시 정중히 봉안되었습니다.
이 모든 과정은 단순한 이전이 아닌, 천년의 인연을 다시 잇는 거룩한 회향이며, 발원이 현실이 된 수행의 결실이라 할 것입니다.

오늘 이 뜻깊은 봉안 법회에 함께해 주신 달성사 보각 주지스님과 봉불사 성원 주지스님, 그리고 사부대중 백여 분을 비롯한 모든 인연 대중께 깊이 감사드립니다.

이 자리에 함께한 모든 분들께서는 이 공덕 인연으로 언제나 하시는 모든 일이 원만히 성취되시고, 부처님의 가피가 늘 함께하시기를 발원드립니다.

이상으로 경과보고를 마치겠습니다.

Progress Report
I will now present the progress report.
After the Buddha entered Nirvana, His sacred relics were divided into eight portions and enshrined in stupas across eight regions of India.
Later, King Ashoka, who unified India, collected these relics and redistributed them, establishing 84,000 stupas throughout the land, thereby spreading the Dharma far and wide.
Among these, one stupa was carried across great distances to China and enshrined at the Ayuwang Pagoda south of Dongting Lake. At that time, the lay practitioner Bang Jamyeong received a portion of the sacred relics.
This connection was then passed on to the great scholar Su Dongpo of the Song Dynasty. Through the passage of time, the lineage continued unbroken until, in the late Qing Dynasty, the relics came into the possession of Ong Banggang.
Ong Banggang entrusted these precious relics to his disciple, Chusa Kim Jeong-hui, who in turn presented them to Master Yeonpa Hyejang of Daeheungsa Temple.
From there, they were transmitted through successive generations—Choui Seonsa, Suryong Hwasang, Cheolseon Hwasang, and onward through disciples such as Pungam and Chwiun—until they reached Venerable Eungsong. Thus, the relics were preserved and handed down without interruption, together with the Dharma lineage.
Through this long passage of time and karmic connection, the Buddha’s sacred relics were finally enshrined in 1982, when the Stupa of the True Relics of Shakyamuni Buddha was constructed in front of the Manwoldang dining hall.
However, the Most Venerable Patriarch Sangwol Boseon deeply lamented the long-neglected Jeokmyeol Mani Bogung Stupa on Yeouiju Peak, which had been damaged and left in disrepair due to external forces.
He made a solemn and lifelong vow that the stupa must one day be restored and the Buddha’s sacred relics properly enshrined there once again.
At last, the right time and conditions came to fruition.
The current abbot, Venerable Seonghae Beopsang, honoring the Patriarch’s profound vow, dismantled the existing stupa in front of Manwoldang on March 31, 2026.
After two months of dedicated effort, today, on May 1, the Jeokmyeol Mani Bogung Stupa on Yeouiju Peak has been newly restored and completed, and the Buddha’s sacred relics have once again been enshrined.
Within the lower foundation of the stupa, seven relics transferred from the Yongamsa Temple site on Wolchulsan Mountain have been enshrined, along with eight sacred beads made from holy soil that the Patriarch brought back from his pilgrimage to the four sacred sites of India.
Additionally, within the first-story body of the stupa, the relic casket containing six sacred relics recovered from the dismantled stupa in front of Manwoldang has been reverently re-enshrined.
This entire process is not merely a relocation, but a sacred continuation of a thousand-year karmic connection—a fulfillment of a great vow brought into reality through devoted practice.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Venerable Bogak, abbot of Dalseongsa Temple, Venerable Seongwon, abbot of Bongbulsa Temple, and the more than one hundred members of the fourfold assembly, along with all gathered here today for this meaningful enshrinement ceremony.
May all who are present here today, through this meritorious connection, find success and fulfillment in all their endeavors, and may the Buddha’s blessings always be with you.
