무엇보다 심각한 것은 개인정보 유출 사태다.
무려 3,372만 건에 달하는 정보 유출, 이는 대한민국 국민의 약 64%에 해당하는 규모다.
단순한 해킹 사고가 아니라, 장기간에 걸친 관리 부실과 구조적 보안 실패의 결과로 의심되는 수준이다.
고객의 쇼핑 정보, 소비 패턴, 행동 데이터 등 고급 정보가 대량으로 외부에 노출됐고, 이 정보가 보이스피싱 조직이나 해외 범죄 네트워크로 흘러들어갈 가능성까지 제기되고 있다.

더 큰 문제는 대응이다.
최초 신고조차 기업이 아닌 ‘고객’으로부터 시작됐다는 점은 충격적이다.
이는 내부 감시·통제 시스템이 사실상 작동하지 않았음을 의미한다.
개인정보 분리보관, 접근 통제, 보안 투자 등 기본 중의 기본조차 지켜지지 않았다는 의혹은 더 이상 부인하기 어렵다.
‘구멍가게만도 못한 보안’이라는 비판이 결코 과장이 아닌 이유다.
그럼에도 불구하고 책임 구조는 기형적이다.
피해는 소비자가 입었는데, 입증 책임 또한 소비자에게 떠넘겨진다.
기업은 거대한 매출을 기반으로 책임을 회피하고, 소비자는 자신의 피해를 스스로 증명해야 하는 현실. 이것이 과연 공정한 시장 질서인가.

노동 문제 역시 심각하다.
과로사 논란, 퇴직금 미지급 의혹, 열악한 근무환경 등은 이미 수차례 사회적 경고가 있었다.
여름철 노동자에게 기본적인 냉방조차 제공하지 않는 환경에서 ‘로켓배송’이라는 속도 경쟁이 유지되고 있다면, 그 이면에는 누군가의 희생이 전제된 구조일 수밖에 없다.

여기에 더해 기업의 대외 행보도 논란이다.
미국 정·관계 인사들과의 접촉 과정에서 한국 정부 정책에 대한 불만을 제기하고, ‘미국 기업 차별’ 프레임을 동원해 압박을 시도했다는 주장까지 나온다.
국내에서 발생한 문제를 외교 문제로 전환하는 방식은 결코 책임 있는 기업의 자세라 보기 어렵다.

쿠팡은 이미 한국 시장에서 연 매출 수십조 원 규모를 기록하며 사실상 ‘국민 플랫폼’으로 자리 잡았다. 전체 매출의 90% 이상이 한국에서 발생하는 상황에서, 그에 걸맞은 사회적 책임과 법적 의무를 다하고 있는지 되묻지 않을 수 없다.

법적 책임 역시 명확히 따져야 한다.
개인정보 유출 시 매출의 최대 3%에 해당하는 과징금 또는 징벌적 손해배상이 가능하다는 점을 감안하면, 이번 사안은 최대 1조 원을 넘는 책임으로 이어질 수 있다.
이미 제기된 6만 5천 건 이상의 집단소송은 이 문제가 단순한 논란이 아니라 국민적 피해 사안임을 보여준다.

이제 해법은 분명하다.
첫째, 안보와 기업 문제를 명확히 분리하고 정치적 소모전을 중단해야 한다.
둘째, 개인정보 유출과 노동 문제에 대해 상설 특검 수준의 독립적 조사 체계를 도입해야 한다.
셋째, 플랫폼 기업의 데이터 책임과 노동 기준을 전면 재설계해야 한다.

기업의 혁신은 존중받아야 한다.
그러나 그 혁신이 국민의 권리와 안전 위에 세워진 것이라면, 그것은 더 이상 혁신이 아니라 ‘위험’이다.

지금 필요한 것은 침묵이 아니라 책임이다.
그리고 그 책임은 더 이상 미룰 수 없다.

This appears not to be a simple hacking incident but rather the result of prolonged mismanagement and systemic security failures.
Sensitive data—including shopping history, consumption patterns, and behavioral insights—may have been exposed on a massive scale, raising concerns that such information could be exploited by phishing operations or transnational criminal networks.
The response has been even more troubling.
The fact that the initial report came not from the company but from customers is deeply concerning.
It suggests that internal monitoring and control systems were effectively nonfunctional.
Basic principles such as data segregation, access control, and security investment appear to have been neglected.
Criticism that the company’s security is “worse than a small shop” may not be an exaggeration.
Yet the structure of accountability remains deeply flawed.
Consumers bear the damage, but they are also burdened with proving it.
The company, backed by enormous revenues, evades responsibility, while individuals must validate their own losses.
Can this truly be called a fair market order?
Labor issues are equally serious.
Allegations of overwork-related deaths, unpaid retirement benefits, and poor working conditions have repeatedly surfaced as social warnings.
If the speed-driven “Rocket Delivery” system is sustained without even basic cooling measures for workers during summer, it inevitably rests on human sacrifice.
The company’s external conduct has also sparked controversy.
There are claims that in meetings with U.S. political figures, Coupang raised complaints about Korean government policies and attempted to frame the issue as “discrimination against American companies.”
Turning domestic problems into diplomatic leverage is not the conduct of a responsible corporation.
Coupang has effectively become a “national platform,” generating tens of trillions of won annually in Korea, with over 90% of its total revenue coming from the Korean market.
It is therefore reasonable to question whether it is fulfilling the level of social responsibility and legal obligations that such a position demands.
Legal accountability must also be addressed.
Under current regulations, data breaches may result in penalties of up to 3% of revenue or punitive damages.
In this case, that could exceed 1 trillion won.
The more than 65,000 class-action lawsuits already filed demonstrate that this is not a mere controversy but a matter of widespread public harm.
The path forward is clear.
First, security issues and corporate misconduct must be strictly separated, and political exploitation must cease.
Second, a standing, independent investigative body—equivalent to a special prosecutor—must be established to examine data breaches and labor conditions.
Third, the regulatory framework governing platform companies’ data responsibility and labor standards must be fundamentally redesigned.
Innovation deserves respect.
But when that innovation is built upon the erosion of citizens’ rights and safety, it ceases to be innovation—it becomes a risk.
What is needed now is not silence, but accountability.
And that accountability can no longer be delayed.
